A Call for Holistic Nursing in Education & Practice
Below you will find my non-thesis project paper submitted for my Master's Degree in Nursing Education.
I developed a two hour presentation as a "mini-seminar" on the need to increase awareness of Holistic Nursing as
a nursing specialty.
This project discuss many key issues surrounding the Holistic Nursing movement:
1. The historical origins of nursing are rooted in holism. We have a proud heritage through Florence Nightingale,
whose contributions and teachings established a holistic approach to patient care.
2. Modern nursing is being led
dangerously close to the medical model of treating the body mechanistically.
3. Healthcare consumers are seeking
holistic care that goes beyond just treating physical symptoms.
4. Nurses are at the forefront of healthcare delivery
and need to be knowledgable of alternative therapies their patients are using.
5. Nurses face many barriers as
they desire a more holistic approach to patient care.
6. Nursing education needs to emphasize Holistic Nursing
as the recognized specialty that it is, in which nurses may become nationally certified.
